Khalifa University of Science and Technology is a research university dedicated to the advancement of learning through teaching and research and to the discovery and application of knowledge. Khalifa University merges Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research and the Petroleum Institute into one world-class, research-intensive institution, producing world leaders and critical thinkers in applied science and engineering. The University endeavors to be a catalyst to the growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s rapidly developing knowledge economy as an education destination of choice and a global leader among research intensive universities.

Dr. Tod A. Laursen
President, Khalifa University of Science and Technology


Tod A. Laursen is the President of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Prior to becoming President of Khalifa University, Dr. Laursen was Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University, North Carolina (USA). While at Duke, he also held academic appointments in civil engineering and biomedical engineering, and served as Senior Associate Dean for Education in Engineering from 2003-2008. In the latter capacity, he had oversight responsibility for all undergraduate and graduate engineering programs at Duke University, representing a student body of nearly 2000.

Dr. Laursen specializes in computational mechanics, a subfield of engineering mechanics concerned with development of new computational algorithms and tools used by engineers to analyze mechanical and structural systems. He has published over 100 refereed journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, and abstracts in this field, as well as authoring or co-editing two books. His particular focus is development of methods to analyze contact, impact and frictional phenomena, in highly nonlinear and complex systems.

He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the International Association of Computational Mechanics, and the United States Association for Computational Mechanics. He also holds memberships in the American Society for Engineering Education and Tau Beta Pi. He served as an at-large member of the Executive Committee for the United States Association for Computational Mechanics between 2007 and 2010, and currently serves as a member of the Executive Council of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (until 2020). Additionally, he has served on the scientific advisory committees of several of the most important national and international congresses in computational mechanics.

Dr. Laursen obtained his PhD and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and a BS in the same subject from Oregon State University.

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi

Khalifa University of Science and Technology

As Executive Vice President of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Dr. Arif provides comprehensive direction and strategic coordination for the expansion and management of Khalifa University and its programs. He maintains effective coordination between the university’s academic and administrative functions, overseeing and controlling student admissions, monitoring campus discipline and ensuring an environment conducive to academic excellence.

He is a board member at Strata, Mubadala’s composite aerostructures manufacturing facility and currently leading UAE universities efforts in the establishment of the Emirates Advanced Network for Research and Education. He is also member in several professional societies including the IET and IEEE. He was the UAE IEEE computer Society Chapter (Chair) for the period 2003-2008

Career Path:

Prior to becoming Interim President of Khalifa University, Dr. Arif was Manager of the Etisalat University College* (EUC) and was also assistant professor and then associate professor at EUC, before being promoted to Deputy Head of the Computer Engineering Department and later to Deputy Manager Etisalat University College. He has lectured on various subjects and specializations within Computer and Communication Networks, including artificial intelligence and multimedia areas.


Dr. Arif has a doctoral degree in Telecommunications from the University of London, Queen Mary College. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the Etisalat University College.
