Raed Shubair is a Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Khalifa University, UAE, and a Visiting Scientist (Adjunct Professor) at MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.

 He received both his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering with Distinction and First Class Honors from Kuwait University, Kuwait in June 1989 followed by his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with Distinction from the University of Waterloo, Canada in February 1993. His PhD thesis received the University of Waterloo Doctorate Distinction Award.

Following the completion of his Ph.D. at Waterloo in 1993, Dr. Shubair joined Etisalat University College (which became Khalifa University in 2007). Since then, he has been taught all UAE national students and alumni for the past 24 years. To date, Prof. Raed Shubair has taught over twenty different undergraduate subjects as part of the BSc in Electrical Engineering program, plus many other courses at the postgraduate MSc and PhD levels. He has received several Teaching Excellence and Distinguished Service Awards.

On the research front, Prof. Raed Shubair has several research interests which include emerging techniques and evolving technologies in communications, antennas, electromagnetics, signal processing, and the biomedical fields. He has co-authored, with his students and international collaborators, more than 200 publications which include US patents, book chapters, papers for IEEE and international journals, and papers for IEEE conference proceedings. Prof. Raed Shubair is recipient of several international awards including the Distinguished Service Award from the ACES Society, the Distinguished Service Award from MIT’s Electromagnetics Academy, and Best Student Paper Awards in IEEE Conferences namely IIT’15, ICSPA’15, IIT’16, and BioSMART’16.

Prof. Raed Shubair has conducted several tutorials and workshops at international conferences with collaborators from the University of Texas at Dallas and Queen Mary University of London, and delivered many invited talks at top universities in the USA (MIT, Ohio State University, University of Central Florida, University of California at Los Angles UCLA), Canada (University of Waterloo, Carleton University), and the UK (Queen Mary University of London, Imperial College London). He was selected by the US National Academies of Sciences to be an Invited Speaker at the 2016 US Frontiers Symposium. Prof. Raed Shubair arranged hosting for invited talks and seminars in the UAE by prominent international speakers who are IEEE Society Presidents, IEEE Fellows, and IEEE Life Fellows from world-class universities such as MIT, the University of California at Los Angles (UCLA), Queen Mary University of London, the University of Central Florida, the University of Maryland, the University Of Sienna-Italy, and many others.

Prof. Raed Shubair regularly serves on the steering, organizing, and technical committees of the top IEEE conferences in Antennas, Communications, and Signal Processing and is a member of the editorial boards of several international journals. Prof. Raed Shubair has been organizer and chair of several special sessions of the flagship international conferences in his fields of interest such as EuCAP’2017 and IEEE APS’2017. Prof. Raed Shubair holds several appointments in the international professional engineering community. He was appointed and serves currently as the Chair of the IEEE AP-S Educational Initiatives Committee, Outreach Chair for IEEE Region 8 of the AP Society, and EuCAP Liaison for the Middle East and North Africa. Prof. Raed Shubair acted as the Technical Program Chair of the IEEE-sponsored MMS’2016 international conference and serves now as Organizing Committee Member and Publicity Chair for the IEEE-sponsored ICECTA’2017 international conference. He is an Organizing Committee Member of the EuCAP’2017 international conference in Paris, France and an Organizing Committee Member of the IEEE APS/URSI’2017 international conference in San Diego, CA, USA. In 2017, Prof. Raed Shubair was appointed as Regional Sub-Director for the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He was also selected in 2017 to become Member of the Board of Directors (BoD) for the European School of Antennas. Prof. Raed Shubair arranged to host in the UAE in 2017 the first workshop outside Europe for the European School of Antennas, the first in the GCC region, and has also arranged for the workshop to be conducted in collaboration with the European Space Agency. In recognition of his various technical and professional contributions, Prof. Raed Shubair was selected by the IEEE AP Society to be its nominee for the ‘2017 IEEE Distinguished Educator Award’.
