Thus all programs at the University emphasize research as a core element, inclusive of applied research centers or institutes.

The University is actively engaged in establishing a world-class Research and Development (R&D) Enterprise that addresses different clusters and includes several R&D and innovation centers. 

The vision for the R&D Enterprise is to be the leading regional hub of R&D in technology and applied sciences. Its mission is to promote the economic development and competitiveness of Abu Dhabi and the UAE by fostering innovation, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship.

To support the Emirate of Abu Dhabi vision of ‘Knowledge Revenue Generation Economy’, the R&D Enterprise at Khalifa University will continue to attract well established R&D technology institutions and companies to Abu Dhabi and the UAE. It will also incubate and support the growth of new innovative R&D technology start-ups.

The Enterprise will carry on the strengths of the University's research and postgraduate studies to support the relevant clusters. It will also continue to foster partnership and collaboration between the University, research institutions, government, business, and industry. With state-of-the-art facilities and resources, the Enterprise will continue to employ staff with a proven international track-record in technology R&D.

It will also continue to identify and focus on the development of science and technology clusters that are most relevant to Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Examples are the information and communication technology cluster, the energy & resources cluster, the aerospace & robotics cluster, the semiconductor & nanotechnology cluster, the health and medicine cluster, and the logistics & Trade.
