Computing Resources and Internet
The University has comprehensive computing facilities, which provide assistance in all aspects of the use of Information Technology. These services are available to all members of the University. Computing facilities available for use by students are based mainly on Unix and PC systems.A Sun network with a number of attached peripheral devices, supports a wide range of applications used in the curriculum. A large number of 'clusters' of networked IBM-compatible personal computers are also provided throughout the University.
In addition to providing access to a wide range of PC software stored locally, these systems can be used to access data and applications stored on file servers. The University has access to the Internet via a high-speed leased line. Added to this, Sun-based Primary and Secondary Domain Name Servers, Mail Server and Web Server are available in the University.
A room equipped with several IBM-compatible PC's with necessary Internet access packages is available for the students to facilitate access to the Internet. Electronic Mail facilities are available on most computer systems, including PCs. It is widely used by students and staff, providing communication within the University and also to computer users throughout the world.
Internal communication in the University is fully automated. A Lotus Notes server with 50 clients has been installed to enable users to send memos and exchange files over the network using this facility.
A wide range of supported software is available on all systems. Microsoft Word for Windows provides powerful word processing capabilities for all the students. The students use Microsoft Power Point extensively for presentations. Other packages widely used for teaching are Excel for spreadsheet applications, Matlab for control systems, signal processing and image Processing laboratories, Maple and Minitab for mathematical laboratories, Access and Visual Basic for database and graphical user interface applications, Sun C compiler and Borland C compiler for software engineering practical and projects, Microtech Motorola Assembler and Cross Compiler for digital laboratories and Lotus Notes for work-flow applications.
