English Language
All tuition and examinations are conducted in the English language (with the exception of Arabic and Islamic Studies). A good command of English is therefore essential for success in the University as lectures, tutorials, reports, and research projects require fluency in written English. Furthermore, students are expected to develop good reading and note-taking skills in order to gain maximum benefit from tuition and the extensive reference materials available to them. In addition, they must be able to speak good English in order to communicate with lecturers during seminars, deliver oral presentations, and take part in discussion groups and tutorials. On arrival at the University, all students undertake an English language placement test. This enables the English EFL staff to classify students in groups appropriate to their abilities in English. Relevant remedial work is then carried out in order to help the weaker students improve their language skills.
Conventional teaching methods together with extensive use of multimedia learning packages are employed. A state-of-the-art language laboratory is used to assist the development of the students' communication skills in the areas of speaking, listening and presentation techniques.
