Information & Library Services

Image rotator The academic programme aims at developing information finding skills among students as a means of preparing them to adopt a positive attitude towards independent thinking and problem solving techniques. One of the important tools for achieving this is through helping students to familiarise themselves with information retrieval skills as soon as they join the University. The English language modules incorporate library-based assignments that require intensive use of the library and information resources.

Thus, the Library assumes a prime position in the academic programme, and it has been successful in building up a substantial collection of teaching research material. The collection is particularly strong in the fields of telecommunications engineering, computer science, electronic and electrical engineering.

The present library resources include around ten thousand volumes of references and textbooks, with facilities for automated catalogue searching by subject, title or author. The collection is growing steadily, with new publications being acquired annually. All the stock is housed in open access areas for users, who can study in the library or borrow material through the computerised loan system for up to eight weeks.

The reference collection is extensive in its subject coverage in order to cater for the information needs in related fields of specialisation relevant to the academic programme as well as for a quick reference in general interest areas. The Library subscribes to more than a hundred current periodicals covering most of the teaching needs and research interests of the staff and students. Articles from periodicals not held in the Library can be obtained from external sources such as the British Library Document Supply Centre.

Moreover, the Library subscribes to databases on CD-ROM, and has on-line access to other data sources through the Internet. There is also a range of audio-visual materials to complement the printed and electronic information resources held by the Library. Other information services offered include reference, photocopying, inter library lending and literature searching.
